The article titled, "Alzheimer's: The Scarey Statistics," provides insight into the devastation our nation faces if Alzheimer's prevention strategies are not implemented. Half a million Americans are facing this devastating disease by the year 2010 unless they/we do something about it.

This subject caught my attention as both my mother and my mother-in-law suffered from this disease and we helplessly watched as two exceptionally intelligent, lovely women were completely devastated. My mother has died but my mother-in-law is being cared for by a very compassionate and loving caregiver. I myself spent 8 months as primary caregiver for my mother-in-law - the worst, most depressing 8 months of my entire life!

The article written by Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., suggests that beyond the basics of diet, supplements and exercise, there are some strategies that can be implemented to prevent brain deterioration and Alzheimer's or other dementia. According to Dr. Dharma,

This concept is called building cognitive reserve (CR) and reveals that, by
taking care of your brain, you can resist the deterioration process that science
predicts may soon arrive.

and

...there is the very exciting possibility that directly enhancing CR may help prevent and reverse Alzheimer's. Moreover, the studies on CR also show that CR is not fixed; at any point in your lifetime, it can be increased.

So what are some strategies for enhancing CR? Dr. Dharma refers to the work of Dr. Stern from Columbia University for some preliminary answers.

How can you protect yourself from losing your mind and memory? That's where
Dr. Stern's work comes to the fore. First of all, the Columbia professor's
research reveals that individuals with a higher IQ, education, occupational
attainment, or participation in novel leisure activities have a reduced risk of
developing Alzheimer's

Dr. Dharma goes on to suggest some specific strategies that might be helpful to anyone who would like to increase their CR and reduce their risk of Alzheimer's by up to 70%.

So how can you enhance your cognitive reserve?

My own research on Mind Body Medical treatments of memory loss, Dr. Stern's work at Columbia, and that of other leading experts reveal that staying mentally active in novel ways may diminish your Alzheimer's risk by up to a whopping 70%.

To be considered effective at building CR, an activity must:

1. Engage your attention.

2. Involve more than one of your senses.

3. Break a routine activity in an unexpected way.

Dr. Dharma does not believe that computer mind games are very effective at increasing CR, but other things such as taking a walk and singing a familiar song or forcing yourself to be more aware of your surroundings and the details of your surrounding may be more effective. I can imagine that "breaking a routine activity in an unexpected way" might be accomplished in a variety of ways.

The author of seven best-selling books, Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. often referred to as Dr. Dharma, is America's # 1 Brain Longevity Specialist. Yesterday my husband and I had the opportunity to try some of the NutriSystem meals for the first time. Someone had given us a few samples. So we decided to try two of the lunch items and split them so we could each taste both of them. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty they were. I'm sure there are many of you out there who have used the NutriSystem plan. Any comments? Did NutriSystem work for you? Were there any meals that you absolutely abhorred? How much weight did you lose? Obesity is much more of a problem in the US than in most other countries around the world. And that almost surely is because of our affluence and the availability of so much junk food/fast food/processed and prepackaged food combined with an always on the go lifestyle! I just twisted my husband's arm the other day to opt for juice or, better yet, water instead of a soft drink while driving into the city. This time I succeeded, but too often the too easy choice is for the soft drink.

While Ken recommends an appetite suppressant Hoodia, there are many other option on the market as well. Having never tried Hoodia, I am not necessarily recommending it on my site. I do, however, highly recommend his calorie reducing suggestions that would be very easy for anyone to implement.

As reported in the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations recently published Calories Count - Report of the Working Group on Obesity, people who are overweight is a serious public health problem in the United States. Since the late 1980s, adult obesity has steadily and substantially increased in the United States. Today, 64 percent of all Americans weigh too much and over 30 percent are obese; in 1988 through 1992, fewer than 56 percent were overweight and fewer than 23 percent of American adults were obese.

The trends for children are even more worrisome. Recent research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 15 percent of children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 are overweight - double the rate of two decades ago. As Americans get heavier, their health suffers. Overweight and obesity increase the risk for coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. According to some estimates, at least 400,000 deaths each year may be attributed to obesity.

What people must know is that you can improve your health quickly with just a small amount of weight loss. We know that physical activity along with reduced calorie consumption can lead to the 5 to 10 percent weight loss necessary to achieve remission of the obesity-associated complications, says William Dietz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Most doctors agree, losing one to two pounds a week is safe and recommended by most doctors for most people. This breaks down to 250 to 1,000 calories per day. You can achieve this easily if you follow some or all of the following guidelines :

1. Use skim milk instead of whole milk or cream in your coffee.
2. Eat low fat yogurt instead of ice cream.
3. Eat more bright colored (green, yellow, orange, red) fruits and vegetables.
4. Eat more lean fish, chicken, or turkey and cut down on red meats.
5. Eat whole wheat or multigrain bread, instead of white bread.
6. Use a sugar replacement instead of sugar (avoid Aspartame).
7. Drink water instead of soft drinks.
8. When you eat out, avoid fried foods.
9. Walk or do similar exercises (e.g. Golf, Tennis) at least 20 minutes a day.

If you do even just a couple of these every day for the next month, you will feel much better and you will lose weight.

And if you are concerned about getting hungry all the time, or losing your energy, try taking a safe appetite suppressant, like Hoodia Balance. This supplement is South African Hoodia from the Kalahari Desert, which makes it more effective. This type is a non-prescription medication and has been tested for years to be safe for most people. It can control your appetite, yet increase your metabolism and energy.

However, do not take any herbal supplement without checking with your Doctor first, if you are on any prescription medications, due to possible interactions between the two, or if you have a special medical condition.

If you follow these simple steps, you will surely reach your weight loss goals and become a much happier, healthier, and oh yes, lighter person.

About the Author

Ken Black is the founder of Weight Loss Discovery, a site all about healthy weight loss.

3 Commandments of Eating to Control Stress

I just got this in tonight from the Mango Man, Wayne Pickering. If we followed these commandments, just think of how much better we would all feel.

The first of these commandments is:
Proteins and Starches Should Not Be Eaten Together!

The significance of this is astronomical. No more hamburgers in buns or with fries either. Wow! We have a long way to go in learning how to eat properly. The reason they shouldn't be eaten together is because the proteins require acidic digestive juices, but starches require alkaline digestive juices. So what does the stomach do when both proteins and starches come at it together? Well, what would you do? Each neutralizes the other and the food rots in our stomach rather than being effectively digested and eliminated. Find out more from the Mango Man by going here:

The Perfect Diet Mini Program

I'll tell you about the other 2 of his 3 commandments later, but if you just can't wait, click the link above to find out more.

Can I show you The Mango Man's ?Flush Fat Fast? Kind of reminds me of the old Snake Oil Salespeople!

So who do we believe and who has this nutrition part of our lives down to a science so that it's timeless and generic. Doesn't that sound familiar?! One of Rick's best friends has been trying to get him to try his strategy so we have finally decided to give it a whirl. His friend who was always overweight has trimmed down and gotten rid of his adult onset diabetes with this strategy so we've decided it's worth a try. Plus he has kept the weight off for two years now.

It's the old fashioned strategy of cutting back on calorie intake. 1500 calories per day divided into 3 meals and 3 small snacks. I've started serving both of our plates and Rick has discovered that he doesn't starve and in fact, that he is quite satisfied!

Along with that go exercise, both muscle building and aerobic. Sorry folks, exercise really is necessary. There's just no getting around it! So Rick has begun losing about 2 pounds a week. That's a great start! I'm not counting, mainly because I don't go to the gym and we don't have a bathroom scale. However, I do get my 10 minutes of musclebuilding in each day using a nifty method we stumbled across several years ago. It requires just counter weight using your own muscles plus a towel for some of the exercises. It's amazingly effective.

I'll keep you posted on our progress! Have a great day!

Juice

We are back on juice again. We just got back from a trip and everyone fed us tooooooo.... much food. Amazingly my husband didn't gain any weight. I think I must have! Clothes are tighter. You know what I mean. They must have shrunk, don't you think?

So we decided to drink just juice again for the time being. We had been on the Hallelujah Diet back in 2000 and stayed on it for 2 years. We learned to appreciate carrot juice and other raw veggies juiced. So we'll do this for awhile. I'm sure it'll be good. And we should actually lose some weight!

Why don't you join us? It will change your health dramatically. I know that because it did ours. We did for awhile. But we´ve gone back to real sugar.

Did you know that there are around 200 sugars found in nature? Scientists used to think that sugar was only useful for energy. But scientific studies have shown that there are 8 biologically active sugars that are necessary for the proper functioning of our bodies.

We were introduced to these sugars in the form of a supplement about 3 years ago and they have revolutionized our health and that of many of our friends and family.

Find out more about them at www.mannapages.com/spg Our page is called HWW Solutions (Health, Wealth and Wisdom Solutions).

It could mean all the difference in the quality of your life and health.

The best answer yet!

This came across my emails today and was too good to resist posting here. Sorry I don't know the author to give credit to the person who originally wrote it!

CONCERNED ABOUT TOO MANY CARBS IN YOUR DIET?

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat! and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. But that didn't mean I was always healthy and fit. So often we think of size (body fat or lack of it) as a measure of fitness. It may be a good indicator, but it certainly doesn't tell all.

We've had our own journey with fitness (and with sickness) and with letting exercise and a good diet slide and suffering the consequences. I'd like to share a bit of that journey with you. Perhaps it will be helpful to you or trigger some ideas or stimulate you to action to pursue your own journey to fitness.

During my childhood and youth we had a garden. It occupied almost our entire backyard. Anyone else remember those days? Depending on the season, there was always work to do. It was my delight to get out in the springtime and help mark off the rows, plant the seeds and wait for them to sprout. Besides eventually having healthy, fresh and generally "organic" food to eat, the exercise, fresh air and sun were a normal part of everyday life. My mother had a rule. No TV in the summertime. The shows were just reruns anyway and there was always so much else to do - not all work either, by the way. So none of us minded.

So I guess I learned some principles of fitness from a very early age. Fresh air, exercise and good, healthy food. Easy to say, but hard to accomplish in this day and age.

After many years in the Amazon region of Brazil our health was suffering. We got plenty of fresh air, exercise and good food, but something just wasn't right. I had had malaria several times, went through years of suffering with amoeba and other parasites, had had infectious hepatitis, etc, etc. I had recovered from them all, but they had taken their toll. I was beginning to worry about early onset of Alzheimer's. I found myself forgetting everything, putting things in the wrong places, accusing my husband of misplacing things when it was really I who had misplaced them. I could no longer with a certainty find the right streets when I was driving so I began to relinquish driving except to the closest and best known places.

Then several things came into our lives that totally changed this picture. After losing our middle son while he was on a hike in Hawaii (which is another story), we decided primarily for spiritual reasons to fast. My husband fasted for 40 days, just drinking distilled water. I chose to do a different kind of fast. We had been introduced to the Hallelujah Diet some years earlier and had begun to do some further study and research on it. (For more information go to: www.hacres.com ). So my fast was total 2 days a week and partial the other days, but I adopted the Hallelujah Diet from the beginning of the fast. And after the fast, we both continued on the Hallelujah Diet for approximately 2 years.

One of the basic premises of this diet is that you eat 75 to 80% of your food raw. That means lots of juicing and lots of salads. It also means no meat or animal products of any kind, no sugar, no refined grains, and so on. That may sound really extreme. But the physical benefits we gained from this diet were also extreme! Within a very short time, my mental capacity improved dramatically and as an added bonus the chronic constipation I had had all my life was gone. What a relief that was! I no longer spent half my time looking for things I had misplaced and consequently no longer experienced the frustrations that went along with not being able to remember who I had talked with, who I had written to, where I had placed my glasses, etc.

At about the same time, we also started following an exercise program recommended to me by my sister. It required the use of weights which wasn't too convenient because of all the travel we did. Later we discovered another system that only required the use of a towel to do body building exercises. And even more recently we have discovered something called Precision Training. That's mostly my husband's territory. He has studied and has been using the concepts presented by this system with good success. Check it out if you'd like at: http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?af=341384

After two years on the Hallelujah Diet, we gradually got away from it. That same year we were introduced to a nutritional supplement that has enabled us to maintain a level of fitness and wellness that we never imagined could be possible at our age (almost 60). The main advantage of the supplements we now take is that they take no extra time - unlike the Hallelujah Diet which is very time and work intensive. These supplements are based on scientific research on glycobiology. (See our personal website for more information: www.mannapages.com/spg). The other big advantage of these supplements is that they are marketed through a referral system which enables us to earn an income and to help others do the same.

Now at almost 60 I have more energy, stamina and basically good fitness than I did when I was younger. Whereas I used to need to take a nap every afternoon (a good south of the border custom) a can now keep going with as much energy as I need. I do still occasionally take naps on Sunday afternoons just for the fun of it!
